PDH Program Luncheon Invitation
In April of 1961, the then private University of Buffalo nuclear reactor was taken to criticality ushering in a new era in Buffalo. Research reactors were springing up on campuses from coast to coast and UB’s was in the top tier with the likes of MIT and the University of Michigan. The Buffalo reactor survived two major fuel upgrades and numerous repairs to its liner and piping systems, the most recent in 1991. But in 1994, with still more upgrades and repairs necessary to stay competitive, the University decided to close the facility. Removal of the reactor fuel was delayed by the Department of Energy until 2005 and decommissioning activities began in earnest in 2008. The technical and political challenges mounted as work planning and physical removal of the facility moved along. It is these topics we wish to consider. People say “you can’t make this stuff up” and the Buffalo D&D project certainly fits this category!
