It is with deep regret the chapter shares the passing of William R. Trautman, PE, F.NSPE this past Thursday morning.   Bill was a past president of our society prior to the merger of the Erie and Niagara Chapters, serving during the 1961-1962 term.    Bill later became president of NYSSPE (State) for the 1968-1969 term, and as I understand was a past director of NSPE at a national level, where he became a fellow in 2001.   He graduated from the University at Buffalo with a MS degree in mechanical engineering in 1950 and served the engineering alumni association as President from 1974 to 1976.    He obtained his engineering license in New York in 1951.

Bill was founder of what is now Trautman Associates.  As noted on their website, “William R. Trautman, P.E.’s engineering career began at the prestigious Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory on Genesee Street where he learned how to build and manage a complex design organization.  In 1956 Trautman joined with architect M. Russell Turley and Norman Schlenker, P.E. to form one of the earliest integrated architectural and engineering firms in the City of Buffalo. Within one year Trautman and Schlenker set out together moving to office space at 879 Seneca Street. The early years of this practice were not all that different from the current times and the firm maintains strong relationships with several of the original clients.  In 1975 the growing firm moved to 369 Hamburg St. and conducted business as William R. Trautman Associates for several years.  Trautman King Markwart Associates, PC formed in 1980 and has been doing business as Trautman Associates ever since.  Bill’s early focus on professionalism, providing integrated architectural and engineering design services and building a cohesive organizational structure, became the foundation for the firm's continuing success.”

Bill was the beloved husband of the late Rosemary (nee Rathman) Trautman; father of the late Richard W. Trautman; and brother of the late Frank E. Trautman, Jr.  He is survived by his daughter, Ellen F. Trautman of East Aurora; son, Dr. Paul D. (Kristin) Trautman of NYC; daughter-in-law, Donna (nee Gottry) Trautman; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Bill was quite active in the chapter, and was known as freely providing advice and support to the board, well into late in his life.   I personally remember a few calls from him sharing his views and advice on various matters affecting he chapter and profession.

An obituary for Bill is below…  services are next Friday and Saturday in the East Aurora area as noted in the obituary.

May he rest in peace.
